i saw the show for which this book was made a few year back at the drawing center in ny. three incredible women artists making abstract pictures, beginning in the early 1900's. this of course, is my version of the cover:)
on our trip to paris for the colette show, nicole and i visited the musee gustave moreau. he established and designed the museum to diplay his work how he wanted it to be seen. a lot of the paintings a unfinished, but huge, epic and beautiful!

Grandma Moses turned to painting in her late senventies for practical reasons, after working with worsted wool to make embroidered scenes which risked being eaten by moths. She painted mostly rural scenes of farm life in America, and was wildly popular in Europe and Japan. She remained more proud of her preserves than her paintings, and proudest of all of her children. This is my book cover for Grandma's M's "The Burning of Troy".
this is the wonderful bolinas beach house where i stayed for a couple days. it is shared by the gravel and gold girls- cass, lisa, and nile, plus visiting artists and more friends:)
a new quilt..! this one is made from raoul's linen textile scraps and a few other finds. the backing is super soft old beacon blanket fabric.

banshees, brownies, norns, unicorns, dragons, fairies.. this lovely book by argentine author jorge luis borges with illustrations by peter sis, gives readers a well-rounded knowledge of imaginary beings. here is my new version of the original sis illustration.
she lived 93 of her 96 years on our family's ranch, farming as we have in carpinteria for five generations. she was a wonderful painter of landscapes and flowers, a creative lady who loved to travel. she was full of love and contagious tears-down-the-cheeks laughter. i will miss her so!
dorothy iannone is an american artist. after meeting dieter roth on a trip in iceland with her husband, iannone left her husband and moved to europe in the 1960's. much of iannone's art is about her relationship with the german artist, illustrated through paper dolls drawings with captions.

hey, jason is wearing my kurt cobain shirt..and is that courtney he's talking to?!!
I paint one-of-a-kind book jackets on a range of subjects, specific artists, cultural topics, photographers and authors. The selected books are a reference to art history and the art of literature and libraries. I choose an image to paint for a cover illustration based on qualities such as poignancy and visual graphics. If the book is not illustrated, I find an image that is complementary to its contents. I may also choose to paint my version of the original illustration. The cover text is included in the painting (title, author and publisher) on a hand-cut paper jacket, using a heavy weight glossy paper and acrylic paints. This process gives the book a new essence, and restores it to better shape (I try to find used books). It also makes it a functional sculpture/painting.
Hand Painted Ceramics
I am primarily a painter using ceramics as my “canvas”. I started teaching myself ceramics as a way of exploring making paintings as functional, sculptural pieces. I love putting my personal touch on the age-old artisanal craft of shaping basic forms from slabs, molds and templates. I make them as smooth as I can where pieces join and leave them slightly natural on the edges. I like to experiment with the different clay bodies, as I don’t have one favorite kind! Some are smoother and whiter, others are dark and sandy. Painting on the different surfaces results in another layer as does the glazing. I am attracted to the more opaque matte glazes, and I have different ways to keep from completely obscuring the painted areas. I work in a community workshop in the company of many people who have been making ceramics for decades. Though I pick up certain tricks of the trade from my fellow ceramicists, I enjoy the challenge of finding my own path to making a cup, bowl, plate, pitcher or vase.
