Colette- Paris, Oct. 5th
The Rodarte sisters asked some of their favorite artists to contribute work for a temporary gallery- Karen Kilimnik, Kim Gordon, and Kirsten Dunst were a few of them. Kate and Laura also had a temporary store with stuff made by David Shrigley, Jason Schwartzman, Miranda July, and more;) I made 11 books in collaboration with the sisters, also our Rodarte and Rebekah Miles for Opening Ceremony merchandise. Here are some tote bags:)

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History recently had an exhibit of bird illustrations from the 16oo's to the 1800's. It was not always easy for these early illustrators to capture a life-like appearance from their taxidermy specimens..some of these birds were in the exhibit, and they looked kind of lumpy with cotton in their eyes. I have a series of plates I am making inspired by the early bird illustrations- from this turtle dove, to a redwing, to a dodo bird!

This painting by my uncle, Steven Brown, is probably from the late 1960's. He and my aunt live in the redwoods of northern California, where he makes large sculptures from the wood burls on their property.
My plate is hanging on the right, which I based on a pattern from the mid-16th century Turkish Iznik period. I have been making ceramics at the continuing education center in Santa Barbara for the last year. Classes just started up again, and I am working on some new plates..

Magic and Alchemy
The Spanish painter and anarchist Remedios Varo, who fled to Paris during the Spanish Civil War. She was exiled from Paris during the Nazi occupation of France and moved to Mexico City in 1941. There she met Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, but one of her closest friendships was with the expatriate English painter Leonora Carrington. Varo died of a heart-attack at the height of her career in 1963.
